The Hobbit - Fall 2003

The Hobbit
December 2003

Written by J.R.R. Tolkien.
Adapted for stage & directed by Kurt Lancaster

The Hobbit, written by J.R.R. Tolkien is the prequel to the epic The Lord of the Rings, recently made into a film trilogy. Adapted from the novel, the play tells the story of Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit, who experiences the ultimate adventure, crossing forest and mountain, encountering trolls and goblins, as he helps the dwarves reclaim their kingdom from the dragon Smaug.

Many people look at fantasy as escapist literature but The Hobbit is not an escapist work. It is steeped in early to middle twentieth-century values, written by a man who lived through two world wars, fighting in the first. Tolkien wasn’t just making up fantasy, he created a mythology.
